Melbourne Cup runner up Bauer may have run his last race.
The English stayer has badly damaged a tendon in trackwork, ending any hopes of returning to try to go one better this year.
The Luca Cumani trained Bauer was beaten a whisker by Viewed in last year's Cup.
"There's no good news," part owner Simon O'Donnell said yesterday.
"He's gone in a tendon, it's up high and they're saying it will be at least 15 months' recuperation.
"It's a huge blow because everything we've done with him since he went so close in last year's Cup has been built around have another go at the race this year."
O'Donnell said Bauer, on the third line of Cup betting at $26, sustained the injury during trackwork this week at Newmarket, England.
O'Donnell and Terry Henderson bought a half-share in Bauer through their OTI Racing company with last year's Melbourne Cup the goal.
Controversy followed three weeks after the Cup when stewards discovered the grey had been illegally treated with shock wave therapy. No action was taken against Cumani.
