Champion New Zealand filly Lauraella has been scratched from tomorrow night's $75,000 Group 1 Australian Oaks at Moonee Valley.

Trainer Geoff Small said the multiple Group 1 winner, who was $3 second favourite for the Oaks, had reacted badly to treatment for a blood disorder.

“She hasn’t been well all week and we wanted to make the decision early to be fair to all concerned,” he said.

“Her blood was out after she ran poorly at Bendigo two weeks ago she’s had a bad reaction to the treatment.”

With Lauraella out, Australia’s best three-year-old filly Broadways Best has firmed from $2.20 to $1.50 to win the Oaks with TAB Sportsbet.

Driver Chris Alford said Lauraella’s scratching had a double benefit to Broadways Best.

“Not only does it mean the main danger is out of the race, but it also means the a change to the barrier draw. My filly starts from two-out on the back row instead of inside it, which could have made things tricky,” he said.

Broadways Best’s trainer Shannon McLean declared the filly better than her previous major wins this season in the Victoria Oaks and Vicbred final.

“This is the best we’ve had her,” he said. “Her work at home has been fantastic and she trialled extra well at Cranbourne last Saturday.”

The Australian Oaks is race seven at 9.30pm tomorrow.
